, newark to philadelphia. so far so good boston logan but what is in new york will soon be heading up toward you. so the heavy rains moving through, winds in new york city right now between 40 and 50 miles per hour. very heavy rain moving up into massachusetts currently. we have to watch some of the flooding too. areas of snow on the ground in new england are going to get drenched with heavy rain today. that could cause minor flooding. also snow through much of michigan, indiana, and ohio. even the high elevations of west virginia. it is not a pretty morning in chicago, either, with windy, cold conditions. this is your snowfall map over the next 48 hours mostly looking at snow in high elevations of west virginia and western portions of new york. happy to tell everyone after we get past today the airports and everything else across much of the country will be much better and your holiday travel will be just fine saturday and sunday. you're watching morning joe with a blowing christmas tree in the background, brewed by starbucks. delays. today is no different. washington, d.c. an hour plus delay for you. newark there all morning. fort lauderdale has trouble at the airport but that is not wind related. san francisco, the rain an inundation with rain today for you, as well. big picture today, the wind and rain and, of course, the snow off the great lakes in the northeast. the rain and mountain snow in the sierra we'll be tallying it up to feet of snow. some incredible ski conditions, but the balance of the country today is dry and a little bit colder than where we should be this time of year. a white christmas, look at the swathe of it. meet logically a white christmas is when there's an inch of snow on ground christmas morning. it doesn't have to be knowing at that time. so much of the countries will see that. but the forecast for christmas here in the northeast, not out of the question for boston and new york to see snow flurries. in the northeast predominantly it will be dry and cool. atlanta rain for you on christmas. nashville, as well. so cloudy and a little bit of rainy in the southeast. in the upper mid

the same for jfk and newark. one of the big reasons, the weather is improving. we're still seeing some low ceilings here but the rain has all but moved out of new york city and those winds which have been the big problem have died down in to the teens so that's really no issue for the pilots here. what is still an issue, though, is the fact that so many people are traveling for the holidays, trying to get home from the holidays or get to the next holiday destination for the new year and unfortunately we have another storm system that's going to be working its way in to the northeast in the next couple of days, just in time for the new yore's holiday so, in fact, we could see more stranded travelers over the weekend in and out of new york city. from la guard yarks i'm meteorologist julie martin of the weather channel. back to you, craig. >> thanks to you. >>> coming up, the latest on former president bush's health after a spokesperson said the former president has suffered a, quote, series of setbacks. >>> plus, new details about senator mike crapo's arrest for drunk driving. it is just one

and 180, jfk, laguardia and newark as of this hour. in terms of the delays we are not seeing them mount as much as we would have thought at this time and one of the reasons that snow not quite working its way into the tri-state area just yet, but we are, nonetheless, seeing low ceilings and visibility issues and certainly wet runways as a result of the storm which will continue to crank along throughout the afternoon and the evening before winding down overnight into tomorrow and really impacting cities like boston which could pick up a foot. i would expect to see major delays for you. here in new york, we are anticipating those delays to continue to climb throughout the evening. one of the good things with this storm, versus the storm earlier this week is the winds are lighter with this so it won't be as much of an aviation problem. nonetheless, if you are traveling you will want to check ahead because we are anticipating anywhere from one to three inches of snow hitting the new york metro area by this evening. >> i remember when i was little and snow was fun. >> reporter: yeah. not wh

that is the chairman of the department of medicine at newark beth israel medical center and he joins us now with more. thank you for joining us. >> thank you, heather. great to be here. heather: why are more people skipping these screenings? >> i think it is a question of economy for one thing. i think the tests are costly. there is also secondarily confusion among physicians what to do, what to scan, what tests and how often they should be performed. for example, let's take breast and mammography. a lot of physicians are confused about that. mammography should be done after age 50 and up to age 74 on a yearly basis. it should be done before the age of 50, say at 40, if you in fact have a first degree relative like a mother or grandmother who has had breast cancer or you have particularly dense breasts that is just one example. the insurance companies are not readily willing or perhaps able to pay for people to get breast screenings. another one is colonoscopy. it is recommended that you have a colonoscopy for average person every 10 years, say after the age of 40. five years for flexable for sigmoid

in the teens. the warm sector has rainfall. heavy rain from philadelphia to trenton, newark, new york, white plains, fairfield county and back up to the i-95 corridor. a lot of wind with this as well. not only ponding on the roadways, but winds will cause air travel delays and serious wind advisories, issued for a good chunk of real estate from the canadian border through dixie. 45, 50-mile-an-hour wind. here is the verification. 67 mile winds gusts and snows will pile up away from the big cities and continue to pile up away from up. >> thank you very much, rob marciano. it is nasty, including in ohio. a snow-packed start. the area bracing for 8 inches of snow in the next 24 hours. the major concern? 45-mile-an-hour wind gusts are possible. victor blackwell, is weathering the storm in cleveland. what's it like there right now? >> reporter: well, rob was right. we're getting this sideways snow. you will see it in the shot that the gusts are kicking up now. no real accumulation of the snow, but overnight, it switched from a very cold rain and consistent wind overnight into the flurries at abou

york, laguardia, jfk. boston as well. laguardia to newark to boston. san francisco has had four-hour delays. now 3 1/2 hours and it is weather-related there, too. ft. lauderdale is having a volume issue. this is the exiting storm, this rain that is leaving. skies are drying out but temperatures will drop precipitously. this is where the travel will really get tough. rochester, buffalo, six to 12 inches of knsnow coming for the. washington, baltimore, clears out for tomorrow and sunday. although it will still be windy. there's the heavy snow in western new york. driving i-90 through the weekend is really difficult. as we head towards sunday, this is the biggest travel headache from seattle all the way down to san francisco. northern california does some very heavy rain and wind for the next couple of days. lisa? >> sounds like everyone is going to have to really be patient as they try to get home for the holidays. >> yes. >> alexandra, thanks. it's not going to be easy but we'll see, hopefully it won't be too much of a travel headache. >> patience is important. lisa, thank you. >

22nd. newark mayor cory booker is starting his food stamp challenge tomorrow and over the weekend he went out and bought $29.78 worth of food for the week. that is a little bit less than what the average new jersey recipient got from the federal supplemental nutritionist assistance program or snap in 2011. other public official have taken the challenge. i remember reporting it on it years ago. several members of congress have done it. also the mayors of las vegas and phoenix and former utah governor jon huntsman. booker came to the challenge on twitter with a follower who was is asking why it is kids need nutrition in school if they have access to food stamps. that twitter follower is supposed to be taking the challenge alongside booker as well. >> alarming news out of syria. the ap reporting syria has been moving around chemical components in the last week. secretary of state clinton is underscoring president obama's warning that if the syrian government uses chemical weapons, the u.s. will take acti

at the airports through new york city. jfk, la guardia and newark. in northern new england we have the storm warnings. it looks like the snow will continue. vermont and new hampshire and picking up in intensity, but from boston to hartford through new york city, it's all rain. it will taper off from south to north. we are looking at two feet of snow across northern vermont and new hampshire and maine. the ski resorts need the snow. boston is 45 degrees and filly is down to 38. we will top out in the mid 40s today. that rain is going to taper off and back across minneapolis and chicago, a couple of light showers and the west coast finally not dealing with torrential rain, we should see at least a break, especially tomorrow from seattle into northern california. a much-needed break for that area. you are watching "morning joe" brewed by starbucks.
